The DNA synthesizers themselves interface with the Macs with Local Talk, so basically any pre-OS X Mac or at least all beige Macs might likely work, the same for ABI's original software for the synthesizers. We are still using a bunch (currently three actively in production use) of old 68k Macs running System 7.5 in our production lab controlling old ABI DNA synthesizers (we are a company doing custom DNA synthesis (so-called oligonucleotide synthesis)).
